PRODUCE SAMPLES FOR JAPAN

Butter, Cheese and Lamb SMALL TRIAL SHIPMENT FORWARDED Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, June 2. An important step in the fostering of trade between New Zealand aud Japan has been taken with the dispatch of a sample shipment of Otago and Southland butter and cheese and of North Island lamb. When Mr. J. Shand, a Dunedin resident, was recently in Japan, he made inquiries regarding the possibilities of a market for produce from Otago and Southland, and was told that if the goods were of the quality he represented them to be there was the possibility of a substantial trade being developed. He was asked to make some small sample shipments of lamb, butter, cheese and pork. After some difficulty he has been able to arrange for the shipment of samples by the steamer Melbourne Maru, which leaves Wellington on June 16. The shipment will comprise samples of butter and cheese from factories in Otago and Southland. In respect to lamb, Mr. Shand was unable to procure refrigerating space from here to make the connection with Wellington, and was therefore compelled to arrange for a sample of North Island lamb to be forwarded. The shipment has been arranged by the O.S.K. Line and the samples will be carried free.
