A MODERN ST. GEORGE
We all know the story of St. George, who went forth and slayed the great dragon, and here’s a story of a modem St. George, only, instead of a dragon, he killed a great, fierce, wounded elephant with his spear, and then, later on, when called upon again, accounted for yet another infuriated elephant, his only weapon being his spear. The first time he was accompanying a game scout in Northern Uganda. The scout bad wounded two elephant bulls of a marauding herd, which was a menace to native crops and villages in the iieighbourhood. One of the bulls, only slightly wounded, charged the scout, and pinned him to.the ground. Out ran Omara, for that is the modern St. George’s name, wrenched the rifle from between the elephant’s feet, and, as he could not reload it, attacked the elephant with his spear. He drove® off, and carried the wounded scout back to the village, a journey of three miles. Unfortunately, the scout succumbed to his injuries.
His second heroic fight was with an infuriated elephant which had taken possession of a village waterhole and terrorised the neighbourhood. The villagers could do nothing, so they sent for Omara. He took his trusty spear, and put the elephant to death, so that there was still one elephant fewer to maraud the native villages and crops in Uganda.
