Mr. Verschaffelt Joins Delegation ADVISER TO MR. COATES Mr. z P. D. N. Verschaffelt, Public Service Commissioner, is to accompany tlie Pt. Hon. J. G. Coates to London to act as his assistant during the discussions with the British authorities ou the meat problem. In making this announcement yesterday Mr. Coates said there were many difficult problems to be faced at Home, and he was anxious that he should have tlie advantage of an assistant possessing a legal mind. In addition to being a barrister and solicitor, Mr. Verschaffelt was a qualified accountant, and. in Mr. Coates’s opinion, would be a decided acquisition to the' delegation. The other members of the delegation, which will leave Thorndou station to-night" to connect witli the Rangitane in Auckland to-morrow, will be Mrs. Coates and the Minister’s personal secretary, Miss 11. D. Montague. Mr. Coates also announced that during Mr. Verschaffelt’s absence abroad his position would be filled by Mr. A. D. Thomson, who on previous occasions has had charge of the office. Mr. T. Mark, at present secretary to the Commissioner, would act as Assistant Commissioner. Mr. Thomson was a Stipendiary Magistrate stationed at Palmerston North from 1903 to 1912. From 1913 to 1920 he held the office of Assistant Public Service Commissioner. He presided over the National Industrial Conference in 1927.
