Horticultural Society’s Evening About 2()0 members and others attended the monthly Flower Circle of the Wellington Horticultural Society, heid in Kirkcaldie and Stains lounge on Thursday evening. Mrs. Knox Gilmer (president) introduced the lecturers, expressing'gratification at the number present and the magnificent display of lilies, dahlias, and other flowers, and thanking the following who assisted with displays: —Lilies: Mrs. Hope Gibbons (basket!.' Mesdames Feil and Von, Heisenberg, Messrs. Shanks and Seddbn; dahlias, Messrs. Shailer and Son, Palmerston North (seedling blooms) ; Central Park (Mr. Gilbert Clarke). Mrs. Nicoll, Miss King, Messrs. Jones. Simm, Stanley. Hare. Botirke; cut flowers. Mesdames Neylon. Butler and Mrs. Du Blois, Botanical Gardens (J. G. MacKenziel. Mrs. Gilmer herself had a fine exhibit of lilies and dahlias. Mr. F. J. Shanks, an authority on lilies, delivered a most interesting and. instructive address dealing with , cultivation. planting, names of varieties, propagation (natural and artificial) by seeds and scales, etc., hybridisation, pests, and origin, including interesting accounts of discoveries in foreign lands by intrepid collectors. Jones, of Miramar, gave an enjoyable talk on dahlias tinder the.following headings Classification, cultivation, planting, staking, hybridisation, diseases, selection of varieties, feeding and exhibiting.
