Alarms Number 152

OUTBREAKS IN GORSE During January the Wellington Fire Brigade received no fewer than 152 calls—a record for Wellington city. This record was due to the very dry season experienced for the last three .months, and the consequent large number of gorse, grass, and rubbish fires. These numbered 108—equal to three calls a day.

Of the 152 calls there were 22 property fires, 2 chimney fires, and 108 gorse, grass and rubbish fires There were 20 false alarms—four justifiable and 16 malicious.

For the ten months ended January 31 the brigade received 667 calls, made up as follow:—Property fires 148; chimney tires 68; gorse, grass and rub bish fires, 270; false alarms. 181
