TO SAVE HAUPTMANN
Preparations For Fight FUND TO BE OPENED Flemington, February 14. Mr. Reilly, counsel for Hauptmann, who spent 10 minutes with Hauptmann in his cell to-day, stated that the prisoner, who is engrossed in plans for the fight to be made to extend his life beyond the week beginning March 18, “is pretty well broken up by his sentence. Hauptmann is still convinced of his innocence and is visibly shaken. He says, ‘How could anybody believe that I, a father, the father of a child like my little Mannfried, could kill anyone else’s baby?’” Mr. Reilly indicated that the attorneys were prepared to exhaust every last measure of the law to set aside the verdict. A world-wide appeal for new evidence would be broadcast, and a “Hauptmann /Appeal Fund,” that would receive contributions from all sources, would be established under the trusteeship of some bank.
