EXPORTS OF MEAT

Proposal For Short-term Agreement CABINET CONSIDERATION AT WEEK-END Consideration of British proposals for the continuation of the present shortterm agreement for the restriction of meat exports into Britain until June 30 will be given by Cabinet during the week-end. The present agreement with a three months’ term will expire on March 31. The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, said last evening that the proposals for an extension were received from London only late on Thursday evening and there had been no opportunity yet for Cabinet to consider the question. The British Government had not yet revealed its conditions for a long-term agreement. The question of sending a Minister to London to negotiate such an arrangement had not been raised by the British Government and had not so far been considered by the New Zealand Government. It was suggested to Mr. Forbes that it might be convenient for the New Zealand representative at the King’s silver jubilee celebrations in May to take part in negotiations for a longterm agreement, but he said the position was not sufficiently advanced to consider that proposal. The Government was anxious to survey the position before committing itself to the proposed short-term agreement. The nature of the season had resulted in some stock coming forward early and there had been a hiatus before further stock was ready.
