THE PENGUIN BOAT'

Ships are driven through the water by screw propellers arranged at the back of the vessel. A German scientist, however, Dr. Judis, who has been studying the movements of penguins, dolphins, and other sea creatures, declares that ships could move faster If the propellers were placed in front of the vessel and drew It forward Instead of driving it. Fast-swimming sea creatures like penguins, dolphins, and seals, according to this scientist, all gain remarkable speed with comparatively small effort. They have two sets of “propellers,” the fins or wings in front, and the feet or fins behind. In fast swimming only the forward fins are employed for straightahead motion. Dr. Judis equipped a boat with fins in front and a mechanism by which the combined flapping and feathering motion of a penguin’s wings could be imitated. Although the wooden tins were stiff instead of flexible, the speed attaigeg was remarkable.
