PLANS APPROVED
Central Fire Station at Clyde Quay
Mr. C. H. Mitchell, architect, appeared before the Wellington Fire Board at Its meeting yesterday and presented a set of lay-out plans for the new Central Fire Brigade Station at Clyde Quay. Mr. Mitchell said that the plans had met with the approval of the superintendent, Mr. C. A. Woolley, and the fire brigades inspector. Mr. R. Girliug-Butcher. If approved by the board, they could be handed, to the structural engineer, Mr. Peter Holgate. The plans are of an impressive threesi oried station building facing Clyde Quay. It lias three sets of large double-doors as exits from a commodious engine house, with adequate watch-room and office space. On the two very finely lighted floors above are the social rooms and quarters for the brigadesmen. There are no architectural embellishments, but the variation in the style of the windows (with particularly lofty ones in the central section) give a sense of balance to the structure. Some eight or nine houses, for married brigadesmen, are provided for on the Roxburgh Street frontage, and provision is made for a large modern workshop. The board approved the plans and instructed Mr. Holgate to proceed with his part of the work. This, it is understood. will occupy two months.
