DEFENCE NOTES

News of Rank and File

ON PARADE AND OFF Infantry Camp To-day

(By

Liaison.)

The Second Infantry Brigade will assemble for annual camp training at Waipukurau to-day. About 1000 officers and other ranks are expected to attend, and a very interesting and comprehensive syllabus of training has been drawn up. Last year the brigade was very unfortunate as regards weather and the camp had to be abandoned. Colonel W. H. Cunningham, D. 5.0., will be in command of the camp. The brigade staff will be Brigade Major, Major A. E. Conway, N.Z. S. ; Staff Captain, Captain G. M. McCaskill, N.Z.S.C. Lieutenant-Colonel R. A. Row, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C., and Major E. T. Row’llings, N.Z.S.C., will conduct a course of instruction for officers in tactics and topography during the camp, ine particular side of tactics to be dealt with will be "The Defence of Lines of Communication and Railheads.” ■ In addition to the Second Infantry Brigade, the Second Field Ambulance will also be in camp. It is expected that about 20 medical officers will attend. It is of interest that this year the dental detachment of the Field Ambulance will be in camp. This is the first time the Army Dental Service has functioned since the war, and its resuscitation will, no doubt, be appreciated by the troops. Major-General Sir William SinclairBurgess and Colonel F. Symon will inspect the units in camp on Wednesday.

Secondary School Barracks. The . permanent staff 'of areas in the Central Command will be busy this month with secondary school barracks. This concentrated form of training for school cadets is of very great value, and particularly eo if held early in the year, lhe following barracks; have so far been definitely arranged: Rongotai College, February 18 to 22; Scots College, February 25 to March 1 ," Danneyirke High .School, February 25 to MarchbJ; Hawera High School. March 4-March 0; Wairarapa High School, March 12-March 15; St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, April 15April 18; Napier Boys High School, April 15-April IS.

Hawke’s Bay Regiment. The Hawke’s Bay Regiment will once more be under canvas next week for its usual camp training. This is the only time throughout the year in which all ranks are.able to be together for training. and therefore'camp life is eagerly looked forward to for more reasons than one. Unfortunately, owing to pressing work and various other reasons, many would-be attendees are unable to devote the time necessary to attend this very important part of their military training, to the .disappointment of both themselves and the regiment. At the, time of writing no estimate ’of numbers attending was available, but, approximately two hundred are expected. This year a considerable amount of the work carried out will be devoted to brigade training, as the regiment goes into camp as part of the Second New Zealand Infantry Brigade. Last year's camp, which was also a brigade camp, had to be disbanded owing to Its being flooded out, and it is hoped that the weather will bold good for the coining week so that the camp may be enjoyed by all and much of 'the valuable training which was lost last year carried out.

Maiiawatu Mounted Rifles. I "With the busiest part of the farmer's year practically over, parades in the country districts have resumed after a break of tivo months. All ranks are keen and looking forward to the annual camp of die regiment, which will be held at Danuevirke from April 1(5 to 26. The programme of work for February and March will embrace mounted drill, map reading, and field firing.

The social side has not been neglected, Ihe chief event of interest being a successful dance at Haleombe last month.
