LAWN MOWERS STOLEN Already serving a sentence of nine months’ imprisonment,, John Truman Wiltshire, farm labourer, aged 33, pleaded guilty to eight charges before Mr. E. Page,' S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He was sentenced to undergo a period of reformative detention not exceeding two years, at the expiration of his present sentence, on one charge, and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within three years, on the others. The charges against him were: Stealing a coat valued at 30/- at Christchurch from H. T. Parkinson; at Dannevirke, stealing a lawn mower, value £ 1/10/0, from Rev. Father Guinane; and of obtaining possession of a bicycle, .valued at £6/6/-, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained; at Palmerston North, stealing a mower valued at £2/10/- from T. Hunt, and another from W. A. W. Northen ; at Masterton, obtaining clothes valued at £7 from J. L. Murray, Ltd., by false pretences, and attempting to obtain from C. Smith, Ltd., clothes valued at £2/5/- by means of false pretences. Detective Sergeant L. Revell gave a brief account of the manner in which each of the offences was committed. In two eases accused had goue to a Catholic Presbytery and had obtained a lawnmower, on the pretext that at the various towns in which lie lived he had always kept the Presbyter.? mower sharpened. Other Charges Two years’ reformative detention was imposed on Henry Edward Jefferd, labourer, aged 65, who was charged with being a rogue and vagabond, in that.he was without sufficient lawful means of support, and that he was idle and disorderly. . . Thomas James Balfour Mason, described as an accountant' and bootmaker, aged 42, was remanded until Wednesday on a charge -of failing to account for £B6/19/1 to the Wellington Gas Company, Ltd., thereby committing theft. . For being on licensed premises after hours, Leo Parsloe was convicted and fined £l. '
