DE LUXE THEATRE

“Lest We Forget” Under the unimaginative title of “Lest We Forget,” a film oT real excellence makes its first New Zealand appearance at the De Luxe Theatre as the current attraction' this week. The picture is founded on a theme entirely new in conception, and is delightful in technical execution, as much as is the acting of the characters. In a shell hole “somewhere in France” (the story goes) are gathered an Englishman (Stewart Rome), a Scot (George Carney), an Irishman (Tony Quinn) and a Welshman (Roddy Hughes). In the thick of battle they agree that when the war is over they shall meet at the Englishman’s bouse for a reunion dinner. In due time the dinner takes place. The Irishman, however, has died in the meantime and his son ■ (Esmond Knight) fills his father's place. A romance springs up between Pat (the son) and the beautiful daughter Sylvia, (Anne Yates). Delicious humour of the happiest British kind is provided by the interplay of the personalities crouching in the hell of no man’s land and later at the Englishman's home. It is all stimulating-and refreshing, first because the tale is novel, and secondly on account of its sincerity. The acting, particularly of Stewart Rome, who is England’s No. 1 man in military and aristocratic parts, is very fine and convincing and the photography beyond criticism. The young lovers are heard in charming song numbers together that add much to the strength of this good British film. The supporting programme is >vell balanced and includes Disney’s “Big Bad Wolf.” Miss Iris Mason at the Wurlitzer. contributes to a satisfying night’s entertainment.
