GOING ABROAD

More Horses From New Zealand FQRM AT EGMONT Good Gallop By Vintage

(By

“Poneke.”)

Off to Australia this week is a batch of New Zealand horses, including several from Hawke’s Bay. -One is Bay Tree, who has been turned out for some time.' and others are The Khedive, Gold Trail and Sir Nigel. The Khedive was sold a while back by J. M. Cameron to Sir Joseph Robinson, the South African racing man who did well with Whakatipu and other New Zealand purchases. Promising Novice. The hurdlers "at the Egmont meeting were far from good. March Alone, who made a favourable impression at New Plymouth, failed at Hawera, where Headland beat him easily, and on" the following day Headland was decisively beaten in a field which consisted of two opponents, one without form .and the other;a debutant. The newcomer won, and won very "" easily, and may go on to more important successes. This was Pango, who, notwithstanding that’ he was fairly highly rated in hack flat races.' was let into the hurdle race at 9.4. Jumping carefully but well, Pango won as he liked. Fersen for Ttf-Arolia. Fersen made .many friends by his win in the Taranaki Cup and lost some of them by his defeat in the Egmont Cup a week later. He was not started on the second day of the Egmont meeting, and his next appearance will be in the Berries Memorial Cup at Te Aroha next week. At Te Aroha Fersen will have only 7.4 to carry. He is regarded as a stayer, and the Te Aroha course will give him an opportunity of displaying his' stamina.

Good Hack Sprinter. \ Lifeguard is a good hack sprinter of Whom more will he heard. He is a big, powerful three-year-old, and has sufficient speed 'to win fair class sprint ’events. He met a poor lot on the second day at Haw’era, but won. with exceptional ease? ' • .

Protest Withdrawn. m . Following a discussion with Mr. F. T. H. Bell,’ secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club, the connections of Imperial Spear withdrew ■. their protest the awarding of the Hornby Handicap to .Rin Tin Tin. There is small doubt that B. Shand’s alleged qualification, as a hurdle and. steeplechase rider would not answer in an inquiry, but a difficulty was the application of the “satisfaction’’ rule at the when the protest was made.

A Useful Team. Rebel Star is due to start in work again at - Riccarton next week. He has been hacked, during the last week dr two and he looks in robust health to commence a serious preparation. Two months have elapsed since he was operated on for throat trouble. Before he went wrong he looked on the way to good ' form, and great interest will attach to his running when he reappears about Easter. The four-year-old McHeath. who went into J. S. Shaw’s stable in November, has had an easy time since then, his trainer having devoted his attention to quietening him, as he was inclined to be fractious. He has done some pace work lately, ai a preliminary to more serious tasks, and he may be ready to show some form in the late autumn. J. S. Shaw has. had an addition to his team, having acquired from Mr. J. S. McLeod, of Hawke’s Bay, a three-year-old brother to McHeath, by Lord Quex from Polly Peachum, by Feramorz from Tressida. It is a great family,' Tressida being the dam of Runnymede. Raasay, My Own, and Simba. The newcomer is now being broken in. • 1 ... ' . Vintage Gallops. - . < Vintage provided the main interest in the work at Riccarton on Tuesday morning. Arrangements had been made for a special gallop on the course proper, next the rails, in the presence of his owner, who is to be his trainer on the. Australian trip. Ridden by A. Messervy, he jumped off at the mile post. Going at a sound pace from the start, he reached the half-mile in 50sec., and, running down the straight at the same even gait, he finished his task in 1.40. He did his work in his usual free style, striding along without apparent effort, and, considering the manner in which it was done, it was an exceptionally good effort. He pulled up well and he looks in great order for his journey to Australia, on which he started this week. It is probable that a short stay will be made in Sydney to give opportunity for some work, before going on to Melbourne. His first engagement is in the Essendon stakes, one mile and a quarter, on Saturday, Mdrch 2, followed by the King’s Plate, one mile and a half, on the following 'Wednesday, while on Saturday, March 9, he is expected to run in the Australian Cup. two miles and a quarter, with the Linlithgow Stakes, one mile, as an alternative.
