Hospitals and Sweepstakes

Sir, —There has been much said at one time and another for and against sweepstakes for the benefit of hospitals. Surely there is much more to be said for than against them? In the first place, the sack would be able to receive the benefit of free hospital treatment without the everlasting anxiety as to whether they will ever be able to pay for it.

New Zealand allows art unions to he run on which there is no limit to _ the number of tickets sold and comparatively poor prizes. Secondly, what are these art unions run' for? Mostly for the benefit of sport. In any case people who want their sports should support them at their own expense. Now if a sweepstake was run for the benefit of our public hospitals every man. woman and child would benefit and would not have to put off medical treatment until /it is oftn too late. It would benefit ratepayers, and end the tragedy of former patients receiving harrowing letters demanding payment for hospital tees. It would give much employment to printers, clerks and. a host of others, and bring more money into the country. Away with hypocrisy, and remember what is good for Peter is good for Paul, and free hospitals are most necessary for the benefit of all.—l am. etc., HARDSHIP. Hawke’s Bay, February 14.
