Ideas . . ABOUT CARPETS
By pwcluisinff the two-tone mottled designs, much the same effect as a plain coloured carpet can be secured, and they will not show marks so readily. Some of the new plain-coloured carpets, with two-tonc borders, are a delight to the eye. If the colours are light, however! they may prove anything but a delight to the thrifty housewife, because they show every mark. By mixing together bran and salt in equal parts, you can brighten the colours on a faded carpet. Scatter the mixture on the carpet, work in tcilh a stiff brush and beat clean. This will brighten the carpet considerably; but you must not expect , the original colours to reappear. Here is a recipe for carpet soap:— Shred an ounce of yellow soap and dissolve in a pint of boiling water. Add three dessertspoonfuls of ammonia and a teaspoon of ivashing soda. Keep in a shallow jar. For use, make a lather of the soap with tcarm water, and rub the carpet briskly with a soft brush. Wipe off icith warm water and a clean cloth. Do not use the soap freely before testing the quality of the colours in your carpet, as many carpet colours are not fast.
