PROPAGATING VERBENA
By Means of Layers, The usual method of propagating verbenas is by taking cuttings, of course. But at this time of year, when there are so many bedding plant cuttings to be taken, frame space is at a premium. Why not, then, try increasing your stock by layering? It’s quite easy- . , ~ Select side-shoots which are just long enough, to allow you to press some part of them into a small pot filled with light, rich soil. Keep Mie layered shoot in position with a small stone. The pots can be sunk into the bed See that the soil in the pots does not dry out. If a couple of crocks are placea in the ’bottom of each pot before the soil is filled in, the rooted layers need not be moved from them until they aie planted out next spring. Sever each rooted layer from the old verbena plant after roots have formed, lift, the pots and let them stay outdoors until frost threatens to injure them.
