PLUMBER IN COURT
False Pretences Charge Telling the storekeeper at Hamner Springs with whom he dealt that his camp had been destroyed by fire and that he had lost all his possessions, Donald Cameron, plumber, aged 47, obtained goods valued at £6/0/3. In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., he pleaded guilty to the charge of having obtained the goods by false pretences, and was convicted, ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months, and to pay into court the value of the goods within a, fortnight. Detective-Sergeant L. Revell, prosecuting, said that accused hail been a resident of Hamner and had been rab- ( biting there. On October 6 he had gone to the storekeeper and hiid obtained the goods in the manner stated. He then ha(l left the district, and had ■been recently located in Wellington by Detective H. E. Oanipin. Mr. A. J. Mazengarb said that Cameron had been drinking at the time and had no recollection of having made the statement. The majority' of the previous offences were minor ones, and it was questionable whether lie should have pleaded guilty or not as he could have obtained credit at tho store without making any representation. He had not concealed himself in any way, and was willing to make good the value of the goods.
