Meeting Last Night GENERAL BUSINESS The Wellington City Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, presiding. Also present were:—Crs. W. 11. Bennett, W. J. Gaudin, L. McKenzie, J. Burns, W. Duncan, T. Forsyth, 11. A. Huggins, JI, F. Luckie, W. Appleton, P. Butler, R. MeKeen. C. 11. Chapman, T. Brindle. No alteration is to be made in existing speed limits fixed for motor omnibuses using the city streets and the Hutt Road, and the permits are to be renewed accordingly. The general manager ot the electricity department was authorised to draw up proposals for the installation of additional modern generating plant at the city power station. The council denied liability in .connection with a chum received on account of accident sustained by a child falling through a grating at Bridge Street. Employees of the tramways and electricity departments who were not granted the two half-holidays during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester, are to be given an additional payment equivalent to four hours at ordinary rates. On the recommendation of the works committee the council decided to surface Roscoe Terrace and portion of Wade Street, subject to half the cost, namely. £l2/10/-. being contributed. The same will be done iu Chisenhall Street on siurlar conditions. The action of tlie city engineer in having the paving plant at Rongotai dismantled with the exception of the drier was confirmed, and it was decided that the portable plant owned by the City and Suburban Highways Board be purchased for £7OO and used at Rongotai in the meantime. It was also decided that in future samples of all bitumen used at Rongotai be taken iu order that they might be analysed should that be deemed necessary.

A petition from residents of Hanson Street regarding a smoke nuisance was referred to the by-laws committee. On the recommendation of the libraries committee the council resolved to call tenders for the supply of book-markers for the use of subscribers to the public libraries. Authority was granted for the publication of a library handbook free of cost to the council.

The abattoirs committee reported that as a result of a visit b.v members of the committee to the abattoirs the slaughtering contractor and employees bad met to consider wages and working conditions and negotiations on these lines were now proceeding.
