HUTT VALLEY NEWS
The Hutt River Board decided yesterday to fall in with the Petone and Eastbourne Borough Councils and grant it holiday on February 27 for the combined local bodies’ picnic at Day’s Bay. A letter of appreciation for the work it had done in extinguishing recent fires is to be sent to the Hutt River Board’s staff, in pursuance of a motion passed at the board’s meeting yesterday.
The continued dry spell in recent months, with consequent low river, had resulted in but little natural development or alteration to the Channel or river conditions generally, reported the engineer, Mr H.'Sladden, at yesterday’s meeting of the Hutt River Board. The season had been particularly favourable to willow growth, which generally had- been prolific, including the recently-establish-ed plantations. The policy of establishing willow plantations at salient localities, where most trouble had been experienced, and gradually linking them with continuous belts, had been eontinned with excellent results, and at very low cost when considered in relation to the permanent results being achieved. The following were fined by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Upper Hutt Court yesterdav for driving at a speed and in a manner that might have been dangerous to the public Onslow H. Benge, £1; John Cowles. £2; William Nicholls,. £1 10/-; John Riddiford. £l. Colm Bates was fined £l/10/- for driving in a manner that might have been dangerous to the public; William Rhona, £1 for having no heavy traffic license ; Phillip Darke 10/- and George Campbell court costs, for exceeding the license load ; J. F. Cles--horn £2 for exceeding the road loan limit; and Evan Brenkley for excess ot overhang.
