HOLY CROSS COLLEGE GRADUATES

Sacerdotal Silver Jubilee

HONOUR FOR PRIESTS OF FIRST CLASS

Aii exceedingly impressive and picturesque function took place at, St. .Joseph’s Church, Buckle Street, Wellington, yesterday morning when Mass was celebrated in honour of the sacerdotal silver jubilee of the ordination of the students of the first class of the Holy Cross College, at Mosgiel. the Provincial Seminary of New Zealand. The representatives of that class in Wellington are Monsignor T. F. Connolly of Kilbirnie, ami the Rev. Father Leo* Dttlv, of Lower Hutt. Other living members of that class who were present were the Rev. Fathers C. J. Collins, of South Dunedin, and H. N. Woods, of Riversdale. A fifth living member is the Rev. Father Michael Scanlan, of Lawrence, and another student of that class was the late Father James McMenamen, of Petone. All the members of the Hierarchy in New Zealand were present. His G-nce Archbishop T. O’Shea presided, attended by the Rev. Fathers Collins and Woods as deacons of the throne. There were also in the sanctuary their Lordships Bishops J. M. Liston (Auckland). M. J. Brodie (Christchurch), and j. Whyte (Dunedin), and Monsignori Delany (South Dunedin), Morkane (Dunedin), Cullen (1-lawera), and McManus (Palmerston North), who, resplendent in the purple and lace of their high office, lent dignity and colour to the service. The celebrant was Monsignor Connolly. of Kilbirnie. and the deacon and sub-deacon were the Rev., Fathers Ulenberg and Nolan respectively, the Monsignor’s assistant priests at Kilbirnie. The Rev. Father Fletcher was the master of coremonies. The jubilee choir, under the direction of .Mr. Frank J, Oakes, sang Van Bree’s Mass in C Minor (re-edited by Sir Richard Terry). The offertory number was Area nelt’s “Ave Maria.” Mrs. G. B. Aldridge was at the organ. Complimentary Luncheon. Those who were called on to reply to the toast, "The Visitors,” at the complimentary luncheon were: Rt. Rev. Monsignor. Delany (some’time rector of Holy Cross College), Rt. Rev. Monsignor Morkane, D.D. (rector 1921-1933), Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy (Christchurch), Rev. Dr. Rossiter, C.M. (present rector of the college), Very Rev. Fathers Cullen and Reardon (U.S.A.), Rev, C. J. Collins (South Dunedin), and Rev. H. N. Moods (Riversdale). The various speeches were in a happy and reminiscent vein, many incidents 'of past days being recalled. Tribute was paid by all speakers to the memory of one who will always be regarded as .the “Father of Holy Cross College”—tiie late Bishop Verdon, of Dunedin, whose prayers and sacrifices gave a reinforcement to the spiritual and material foundations of New Zealand’s provincial seminary, more reliable and enduring than the best ol steel and concrete. Two genial and eloquent American visitors (the Rev. Fathers Reardon and Cullen. \of St. Paul’s. Minn., U.S.A.) took occasion of their replies to remark that they scarcely knew at which to marvel the more —the beauties of our scenic wonders or the extraordinary welcome and hospitality extended to them by their brother priests from the day they landed at the Bluff some weeks ago. Their attendance at so large a gathering of the clergy of the archdiocese on the day of their arrival in the capital city was in the nature of a happy coincidence, in that they belonged to the Archdiocese of St. Paul (Minnesota) —a diocese with a long enduring association with that of M’ellington. The late Archbishop Ireland, under whom they had worked for many years, was a classmate in France of the late Archbishop Redwood, and their friendship had been intimate and life-long. Both Fathers Cullen and Reardon had met Archbishop Redwood on the occasions of his many visits to St. Paul’s. Many Priests Present. The following priests were present at the Mass: —Rev. Fathers Reardon and Cullen (St. Paul's, Minn.. U.S.A.), Ven. Archpriest Kelly.- Rev. Dre. Kennedy (Christchurch), Rossiter (rector, Holy Cross College. Mosgiel), O'Neill (Mosgiel). Very Rev.
