MOTION DEFEATED
Deletion of Word ‘Amateur’ WOMEN’S GOLF IN ENGLAND (Received February 7, 5.5 p.m.) London, February 6. The Ladies’ Golf Union by 272 votes to 182 defeated the Surrey Association’s motion to delete the word “amateur” from the conditions of events the union controls. Mrs. Smith, submitting the motion, said that by opening the door toplayers whose amateur status was infringed, there would be more honesty and less sham amateurism. Mrs. McNair, who led the opposition, said that acceptance of the proposal would do infinite harm in the Dominions and America, where there was a strong feeling that there should not be a difference regarding amateur status between men and women golfers. The Union also decided that the winners of women’s championships might not exploit their skill for profit without losing their amateur status.
