OPERATION STOPPED
How a tube was found to be wrongly connected to an anaesthetic apparatus used on a patient in the operating theatre at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital was described at the. inquest on Edna May Souter, aged 18. A doctor, who administered the anaesthetic, consisting of gas and oxygen, said that the gas Started to give out. and lie resorted to ether vapour. When he noticed that one of the tubes had been wrongly connected by a nurse, the patient was given an injection to bring her back to semi-consciousness. The operation was not performed. Dr. Kilpatrick gave evidence that Miss Souter died two days later from bronchial pneumonia brought on by the irritation of the ether. |( A verdict of “death by misadventure was returned, the coroner observing thill a committee of the hospital stuff was taking the matter up.
