THE KING’S WISH
Dispute Between Free State and Britain
SETTLEMENT MOVE DESIRED Reported Intimation as Royal Command MARKING COMING JUBILEE By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received February 7, 7.10 p.m.) London, February 7. The “Daily Mail’s” Dublin correspondent says it iis understood on the best authority that the King has intimated as a Royal Command that he does not .wish the twenty-fifth anniversary of his accession to the throne to pass without movements being made to end the present dispute between the English and Free State Governments. Hjs Majesty makes no reference to a condition or means whereby this can be achieved as he wishes to be completely outside the realm of politics, but has intimated that it would be pleasing to him, in view of the fact that his reign has been notable for friendly feelings between his Dominions, if the Anglo-Irish difference could also be put upon a basis of settlement. CITIZENSHIP BILL Questions About de Valera (Received February 7, 10.25 p.m.) Dublin, February 7. “What nationality is Mr. de Valera? Was he an American citizen in 1916? When did he become an Irish citizen?” asked Dr. Gogarty during the report stage of the Irish Citizenship Bill. Dr. Gogartv declared there was nothing in the Bill to prevent “Europe’s riff-raff” entering the Free State and becoming citizens. Mr. de Valera, replying, said that persons not provided for in the Bill would have to prove.their right to become Free State citizens. , The report stage was passed and the final stage adjourned sine die.
