FOUND DEAD WITH BROKEN NECK

QUANTITY OF DIAMONDS MISSING By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received February 6, 8.25 p.m.) Perth, February 6. The body of Edgar Whitfield, aged about 60, night caretaker employed by Carls Brothers, jewellers. Bay Street. Perth. was found during the night at the rear of the shop with a broken neck and diamonds valued at £4OOO or £5OOO were missing from the safe. Whitfield was seen last night at about. 10. o’clock transferring diamonds from the window’ to the safe in accordance with his usual custom. Later the police received a telephone message from an unknown man saying he heard a crash of falling glass within the shop. Their examination revealed Whitfield’s body. There was evidence of theft, and the police are of the opinion that Whitfield’s neck was broken during a violent struggle with the burglars.
