REORGANISATION PLAN

British' Herring Industry BOARD TO BE SET UP British Official Wireless. (Received February 6, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, February 5. The Government’s plan for reorganising the herring industry was approved last night when a Bill giving effect to it was read a second time without division. Tlie Bill provides for the setting up of a board representing the herring industry and entrusted with the duty of preparing a scheme. It was stated that the board would be able through its decisions to carry out important recommendations of the Sea Fish Commission, particularly in regard to the provision on easy terms of new boats and gear. reconditioning of old’ ones, marketing services and exports. Efforts to extend markets abroad will engage the early attention of the board, but Sir Godfrey Collins, who introduced the Bill, pointed out that if the home market were restored to the prewar level, it would absorb a 20 per cent, increase in the total catch as compared with last year.
