NGAURUHOE STILL STEAMING
Force of Eruption Spent SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND HEAVY RAIN Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain were experienced in National Park yesterday, according to Mr. R. Cobbe, manager of the Chateau Tongariro. In a telephone interview Mr. Cobbe told “The Dominion” that the eruption of Ngauruhoe, which began on Saturday afternoon, bad subsided, but the volcano was still steaming. “Since the eruption began on Saturday, when the mountain shot up a column of smoke to .a height of 4000 feet, the weather for the most part has been misty and heavily overcast,” he said. “As a result only glimpses of the peaks have been caught from the Chateau.’’ Yesterday morning the weather cleared for a short time and, visibility improving, a view of Ngauruhoe -was obtained. Steam was then rising from the crater, but it was evident that the force of the eruption was spent. So far the conditions have prevented an examination of tlie mountain from close range, but Mr. Cobbe stated that when the weather cleared a party would be sent from the Chateau to investigate the extent of Saturday’s eruption. ,
