GOLD MINING Big River Return for January Big River Mines, Ltd., reports that during January 293 tons was crushed to yield 257 ounces 8 dwts. of melted gold. There will be no clean-up in the cyanide department till the end of February. The total estimated value of the gold won is £1930. In addition, 4 tons 10 cwt. ct concentrates was saved, the estimated value being £135. In the above estimates the value of the gold is taken at 150/- per fine ounce. Chapman’s Find Gold Mine The Chapman’s Find Gold Mining Co., Ltd., reports that during January work was concentrated mainly on the opening up of Nos. 1 and 2 leaders where they have been cut in the low level. Both leaders are now producing payable ore. In order to keep up the ore supply in the meantime a small amount was mined from a sub-drive below the upper No. 2 level. Work was also carried out on a prospecting drive to investigate leaders believed to lie south of No. 2. From January 7, when work was resumed after the holidays, to the end of .the month 6 tons 15 cwt. of general ore and 61b. of picked stone were treated for a return of 40oz. 7dwt. of melted gold. Of the picked stone; 51b; yielded about 9oz. and 11b. treated separately returned about 6oz. Skippers, Limited The mine manager of Skippers, Limited, reporting on mining work at Maori Point during the last fortnight, says that after the first flood on January 7 every endeavour was made to straighten things up, and to recommence paddock work. The paddock was rebottomed on January 16, but on the next day another flood came down, and the paddock was again filled in completely. Since then there have been five more floods, each of which was over the six feet level, and in consequence no work could be done, except that bluegum piles have been driven on the river side of the paddock and spare flume plates have been fixed to these to act as a groyne to throw the force of’ the flood water away from our excavation, which is about in the centre of the old river channel. During the last few days the weather has cleared up and we are again at paddock work, and it is expected that the bottom will be cleared before February 4, when- the gold boxes will be put in position. It is to be regretted that such unusual weather has been experienced, as the prospects were most encouraging, and it is expected that given a clear run the results will be such that the confidence of the directors will be vindicated.
