Wellington Centre’s
Activities The Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur ’ Swimming Association met last night, Mr. W. H. Gertie presiding. The annual contest for the Peck Shield will take place on Saturday over a course of lj miles, starting from the corner of the floating dock wharf at 3 p.m. There are record entries of about 70.
Mr. F. Pinfold, representative of the Primary Schools Association, proposed the following remit to go forward to the forthcoming national conference of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association : “That the Government be approached with the object of making swimming lessons compulsory in the schools, and that the teaching of swimming be made a compulsory part of a teacher’s' training syllabus.” The motion was approved. On the motion of Mr. P. Coirn. a remit “That no national diving championships be held except where standard equipment is used at recognised baths,” was adopted.
Mr. A. McKay was appointed the centre’s delegate to the national conference, which will be held in Auckland, The sole selector, Mr. P. Coira, announced that Miss P. Price. New Zealand woman diving champion, K. Spry and A. Somervell, would represent Wellington in the New Zealand championships at Auckland.
