GANG OF SWINDLERS BROKEN UP

ONE OF LEADERS ALLEGED TO BE MELBOURNE MAN By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received February 4, 8.10 p.m.) London. February 3. The “Daily Mail’s” Paris correspondent says that the French police claim that, the largest gang of international swindlers with which they have ever dealt lias been broken up following the arrest of two alleged ringleaders, a Melbourne man and an American. A gang of 15 is believed to include Americans, Australians, Britons and Canadians. It allegedly fleeced victims in Germany, England, Switzerland and Italy of tens of thousands of .pounds by means of confidence tricks.
The Melbourne man’s luggage contained forged bank notes wrapped in genuine £lOO Bank of England notes. He allegedly confessed and attribute'll his downfall to drink and drugs. Entries in his pocket book revealed the gang’s headquarters where an American was arrested. The others escaped. Much opium was found.
