A Dry Countryside (From "The Dominion,” February 5, 1910.) A big tire balloon, which alighted on the ranges behind Muritai on Wednesday afternoon, was sent up from Koro Koro, Petone. The practice of sending up fire balloons at this season of the year is not as harmless as it would seem at'first glance. At the present time the herbage for miles around is as dry as a tinder, and a balloon might cause a fire which might have serious consequences. * * « The Minister of Agriculture has arranged for an inspector of orchards to visit Tasmania ind gain information in regard to tile export of apples, with a view to the Nelson district dispatching between 4000 and 5000 cases of apples, and more if possible, to London subsidised by the Government at Id. a pound direct shipment. >3 * * Mrs. Asquith will to-morrow christen the first Australian destroyer, the Parramatta. The Prime Minister has been invited'to be present, but ib is probable that business will prevent his acceptance of the invitation.
