MOTORIST IN COURT Remand Granted and Name Suppressed in Meantime . The driver of the motor-ear which ran off the road on to the beach at Mahiua Bay on Sunday evening appeared in the Petone court yesterday charged with being in a state of intoxication while in charge, and was remanded for a'week. Senior-Sergeant G. Sivyer said defendant had been released from the lock-up at midnight on Sunday in his own bond of £2O. Counsel, Mr. McAndrew, in asking for suppression of the name, said that no good purpose could bq served by publishing it in the meantime. Defendant was a well-known man, particularly in the dental profession, arid publication would affect him and his family. Mr. J. W. RIFLE SHOOTING Petone Rifle Club The Petone Rifle Club fired a competition counting for tile • third handicap series and Longfield handicap aggregate at Trentham on Saturday, the range for the day being 600 yards. All riflemen find the 600-yard distance difficult at any ■time, but on Saturday a front gusty wind, and an uneven light, gave plenty of scope for judgment, and in most cases the elements won, and a “magpie” or “outer” would appear. The best range score for the day was secured by W. H. Ballinger with 4S (4555455555), and thiS brilliant score was not obtained easily, as changes of four degrees windage were necessary between most shots. T. Warburton returned 46 (5534555545), followed by R. 11. Nidholl, 44, and W. H. Ballinger with 44 in his second shoot. The club standard for 600 yards is 00, and W. H. Ballinger- returned an aggregate of 92 off the gun, followed by T. Warburton BS, R. H. Nicholl 86, T. McNab 84.

The final leading aggregates in the sec- ■ ond handicap series (best four shoots in December and January) were as follow: A grade, T. Brown 340, T. Warburton 336, O. Pedersen 331; B arid C grades combined, F. L. Burrell 360, C. E. Tanner 349. D. K. Pritchard 344, S. C. Higgins 339, A. Scott 339.
