WELLINGTON’S MILK

A Shortage Unlikely Fears have been entertained in some quarters that the milk supply for Wellington may be affected by the abnormally long spell of hot, dry weather. Such fears, however, are stated to be groundless. In the area within a 30mile radius from which Wellington draws its milk there is only a reduction of one-eighth as compared with the output’for the corresponding period of last year. This area is supplying 4400 gallons daily, besides which some 3300 gallons come from the Otaki district. The department has now commenced to draw supplies from I’araparauinu, and will shortly tap To Horo and, if necessary, Waikanae, Manakau and Levin.

The near-by farmers, who vend their own milk have been affected, as the hilly pastures round about Wellington city have suffered somewhat by the dry spell. Most of these vendors are obtaining supplies from the municipal station. The amount they are securing daily is between 500 and 600 gallons, as well as large quantities of cream.
