TRAM COLLISION
Hataitai Tunnel Accident
CHILDREN ON LINE Two children playing in the Hataitai tramway tunnel yesterday afternoon caused the collision of two tramcars on their way through the tunnel. Although both cars were extensively damaged, the driver of the second car, Mr. J. Pearson, of 63 Endeavour Street, Lyall Bay, was the only one to receive injuries, suffering from cuts and abrasions.
Mr. Pearson was driving a car bound to Lambton Station, which was following behind a Karori tram. The driver of the first tram, noticing the children, applied the emergency brake and pulled up in time to avoid running into them. The hydraulic brakes were applied in the second tram, but, according to the driver, appeared to slip, and the car hit the end of the stationary Karori tram, splintering the glass and woodwork.
One of the cars was able to proceed back to the city under its own power, but the other, more extensively damaged, was taken to the tramway workshops at Kilbirnie. Mr. Pearson, after receiving attention in the nearby surgery of Dr. A. Tennent, was taken to his home in an ambulance. His injuries are not serious.
The Hataitai tramway tunnel is not open to pedestrians. Notices outside indicate that passage through the tunnel is prohibited.
