Outbreak at Southbridge

Christchurch, February 4
On a sheep run owned by Mr. J. t Denton-,on the Plains live miles northwest Of .Southbridge. 31 fniles from Christchurch, fire to-day swept 300 acres of dry grass and threatened to spread over neighbouring properties and an acre of pine plantation on Oakleigh Estate.
A large army of fire-fighters, with the aid of fire breaks and careful back firing, eventually controlled and extinguished the fire. Mr. Denton had been anxious about fire risk and his staff had been burning off with narrow fire breaks. The outbreak began when the fire leapt across the break into the dry pasture and quickly spread over a half-mile front.
