YOUTH DROWNED

Bathing at Castlecliff RESCUE ATTEMPT FAILS Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, February 3. Alan Francis, aged 20, single, was ‘drowned at Castlecliff beach this morning. In company with John and Donald Coull. aged 17 and 11 respectively, Francis had been on a trip round the entrance to the river in a canoe. The sea was calm and the trio came ashore at 8.30 a.m. after an outing lasting since dawn. They left the canoe at a wharf and walked* up the beach. Francis decided to go for a swim. The other two were reluctant, but eventually the younger boy Coull went into the water with him while John stayed on shore. Francis evidently went too far out and was seen to be in difficulties. The younger Coull also found the undertow severe and just managed to come ashore. The elder brother, seeing the others in difficulties, tried to reach Francis, who was an indifferent swimmer, but when he reached the spot where the bather bad last been seen he could not find him. Later in the day the body was discovered by a swimmer on the beach. The fatality occurred above the normal bathing point. Deceased was employed by John Coull as a clerk and storeman.

BODY RECOVERED

Waitarere Accident Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, February 3. The body of Colin Dawson, aged 16 years, of Opihi, Tokomaru, who was drowned in the surf at Waitarere beach last Thursday, was discovered this afternoon by batherrs in the resence of the police. The body was found in the breakers close to where the boy was last seen alive. MINER’S DEATH Fall Into Deep Hole While Fishing By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, February 3. A Pukemiro miner, John Thompson, aged 51, married, was drowned while fishing at Raglan. ' At three o’clock this morning a party went fish-spearing at dead low water. Thompson fell into a deep holo and disappeared. It was pitch dark and a fruitless search was madb by his companions.
