“Black Hand” in America (From “The Dominion.” February 2, 1910.) Some months ago the United States secret service police arrested at Marion, Ohio, an Italian fruit dealer named Sam L'lilti who was believed to be one of the principals of the “Black Hand” organisation. Lima’s house, which was thought to lie the headquarters of the Black Hand of the United States, was found to be filled with incriminating letters decorated with skulls and crossbones and bleeding hearts. Seven other men were also arrested. The investigation was carried out by secret police in conjunction with postal inspectors, who declared that the back room of Lima’s fruit shdp was filled with letters which cast light on many successful attempts to exhort money from wealthy Italians. The letters seized also showed that over IOC) Italian business men had paiM money to the Black Hand to secure immunity from . * * Carjtain Scott, who is to lead the next British expedition to the Antarctic (by way of Victoria Land or Edward VII Land), in a speech tn London stated that he will start in June. The main journey will begin in October 1911. and Captain Scott hopes to reach the South Pole at midsummer. December 22.

At the inquiry into the stranding of the Kaipara in Rangitoto Channel, Captain Duder, harbourmaster at Auckland, said he took it that the shoal (a rock 120 feet long and 80 feet wide) was the cause of the casualty. It had 25 feet of water ou it at low spring tide. It was not true tluit the shoal was right in Hie fairway It was on tlie edge of the deep water channel. He admitted, however, that it was in the fairway for small vessels, but not in the fairway fin- big vessels. The chart showed 31ft. 6iu. when in fact these .was only 25ft, oa it.
