'‘KNIGHTS OF THE ROAD”
Two “Knights of the Road,” who tramped from Oamaru to Auckland in search of work, frankly challenged the hospitality of the North Island in an article in “The Dominion” on Saturday:— If you’re contemplating hiking, And for free meals have a liking, The North with vou will frankly disagree, ■ ‘ For at men resembling swaggers All North Islanders look daggers. And very few will ask you in to tea. It is said that Auckland city Offers neither food nor pity, That at Hawera no crumb will pass your mouth. ' While the fare at Te Kuitl Cannot be described as "meaty” By out-at-elbow tourists from the South. Yes, the way we treat the trampers Who depend on us for hampers Would seem to raise a question for debate: If the free and friendly ration In the South is still the fashion, Why has half the population crossed the Strait? ’ —W.T:
