HUTT VALLEY NEWS

GALA AT DAY’S BAY Large Crowd Present Day’s Bay had a lively appearance on Saturday night when a crowd estimated at 3000 attended the gala there. This was the largest number of people seen at the bay for a considerable time, being far greater than that over the Christinas and New Year holidays A 'big crowd went over on the Muritai. but many more travelled by ears; indeed motor-cars were so numerous that it was difficult to find a parking place near the pavilion after 9 o’clock, and several people had to park a hundred or two hundred yards away on either side. The entertainment arranged was varied' and interesting and afforded great enjoyment to everyone. To start with, a vaudeville show was held, the entertainers, who were accorded enthusiastic receptions, being Mr. Dau Hopa popular Maori baritone: Mr. Vivian Middleton, a clever ventriloquist; Miss Gracie Kerr, a favourite elocutionist in Wish Wynne sketches; Miss Miriams Heketa, well-known dancer; and Mr. Frank Andrews, entertainer at the piano. Mr. Earnest E. Dean was the accompanist. The pavilion was comfortably full. Later in the evening a fireworks display was given from the Muritai, about 100 yards out from the wharf. This was very spectacular and effective, including rockets, golden rain, stars, parachutes; aerial shells and Roman candles. The joy-planes (merry-go-rounds) were also popular, and were used by hundreds of people. From about 10 p.m. until midnight, the hall was crowded —over-crowded in fact—with dancers, who enjoyed the music of the Merry • Melody Makers Orchestra. Entertainments of this sort are certain to popularise, the bay and assist the revenue of the ferry service. With this end in view it is understood that further galas will be held at regular intervals. THIEVING AT BATHS Lockers Desired A' “Dominion” reporter heard’ three complaints on Saturday concerning petty thieving in the Rlddiford Baths at Lower Hutt, and the opinion was expressed that lockers should be provided for the patrons. At present if persons want to safeguard their property it is necessary to leave it in charge o£ the custodian, but this, it was pointed out, is not satisfactory, as clothing cannot very well be left for him to mind and is sometimes taken. One person, who frequently uses the baths, mentioned that it was desirable to have locks on each cubicle, and as well as that Have lockers in the large sheds which people could use at a fee. He said also that the low partitions between the cubicles should be carried up to the roof, as anyone could climb over them at present. CAR RUNS OFF ROAD Driver Arrested A two-seater roadster car collided with a telegraph post in Mahina Bay. last evening, and skidded on to the beach. As a result a Wellington man was arrested by Constable R. D. Squire; he will be charged in the Petone Magistrate’s Court this morning with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car. The mishap happened about 8 o’clock when the car, which was considerably damaged, was travelling toward the city.
