BAND FUNDS BENEFIT
Garden Party at “Homewood” Perfect weather and ideal surroundings favoured the garden party held at “Homewood,” the beautiful residence of Mr. B. Sutherland, Karorl, on Saturday afternoon, and in the evening. There were excellent attendances, all present enjoying themselves to the full. The proceeds were in aid • of the Port Nicholson Silver Band, which,-from a natural arbour, was heard in many popular numbers. As was to be expected on such an afternoon as Saturday, the spacious swimming pool was one of the major attractions, a large crowd of swimmers making .the most of the coolness offered by the shady surroundings and the inviting water. Next in popularity were the ferneries, veritable fairy bowers of greenery and quaint waterfalls. Glorious flowers in glass houses also came in for much attention, as did also the aviaries, in which ■ are housed all sorts of birds. On the large lawn. were aunt sallies, stalls of all descriptions and several side-shows, one of the most popular being the Punch and Judy, under the direction of Mr, Lansdowne. During the afternoon there was an exhibition of trick and under-water swimming by Professor Allen, and Scottish dancing by pupils of Miss Adeline Burnett, the music being supplied by Piper Angus Graham. The band gave a quickstep exhibition. In the evening the grounds were illuminated in fairy-like manner, countless coloured lights being hung across paths and among the trees. The star attraction was the glow-worm grotto, a miniature Waitomo Cave, which really has-to be seen to be believed.
It is estimated that the attendances at the two sessions totalled 2500.
