SURF LIFE-SAVING

Annual Competition at Paekakariki EXACTING CONDITIONS The annual competition for the Law Rose Bowl, Kennedy Marching Cup, and -Sanderson Memorial Cup was held yesterday at Paekakariki under the auspices of the Wellington section of the New Zealand Surf Association. Favoured by ideal weather, that was, if anything, too hot for comfort, the competition was witnessed by a large number of spectators. Although there was nn entire absence of surf, a strong drift from the north in the morning, followed -by an equally heavy drift from the south in the afternoon, made conditions very exacting for competitors. In almost every case the beltmen found they had underestimated the drift, and in consequence times suffered accordingly. Officials responsible for the success of ■the gathering were Marshal, Mr. N. A. Ingram; assistant marshal, Mr. W. J. Griffen; judges, Messrs. W. J. Beveridge, 11. Dickson, P. Edwards; timekeepers, Messrs. J. b oley. I. Ricketts. S. Dudson ; referee, Mr. V. Allen At the conclusion of the march past for the Kennedy Cup, the teams were addressed by Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., who paid tribute to the unselfish work performed by life-saving clubs throughout the Dominion. Results of the events are as follow Law Rose Bowl.—Eastbourne (patient, G. Paekakariki. 78.16 points, 3. Worser Bay. 75.66, 4. Island Bay, 74.5, 5. The Lyall Bav team were disqualified through the inability of their beltman to get to the buoy in the allotted time.
