DEWAR SHIELD

Old Boys in Lead CYCLING TITLES In the history of the Dewar Shield competitions there have been few better races than those at the Petone Oval on Saturday, when the first of the season’s ehield meetings was held, inter-chib rivalry being so keen as to make the competition niOHt spirited. The day was a triumph for the young Combined College Old Boys’ Club. In track contests they secured a predominance of the platings, and performed creditably in the field events. Platings for the shield are as follow: Combined College Old Boys, 5 points 1 Wellington, 3 points 2 Kiwi, 2 points 3

Scottish, 1 point 4 Not a little interest attached to the Wellington provincial cycling championships held in conjunction with the meeting, and spectators were entertained with excellent cycling. Few if any races could have produced greater rivalry and more thrills. It was a happy thought on the part of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre to secure the incorporation of the cycling championships and one which will surely serve to popularise furtehr the attractive Dewar Shield meetings.

The new provincial champions are:— L. Roberts (Wellington), 1000 metres provincial championship. R. Ulmer (Athletic), 1000 metres time trial.

T. Roe (Petone), 10 miles championship (human paced). J. Wilson (Athletic), 880 yards junior championship. In addition to being an innovation on an inter-club programme, the cycling championships themselves were an innovation so far ns Wellington and New Zealand were concerned. Each event was run off on the international system, which recognises the metre distance and introduces new types of rating. Undoubtedly the most spectacular and thrilling event, irrespective of the mixed competition. was the 10 miles, human paced, championship. From the start a large field of select riders set a very fast pace which was increased, if anything, with the defections toward the end. _ T. Roe, Petone, won in a slashing' finish after riding half the last lap on the outside. Tlie perfect weather and hopes of seeing something really worthwhile from a combined meeting brought out a large crowd appreciative of the many fine performances. But for a light southerly, which tempered the heat, conditions so fnr as competitors were concerned would have been unbearable. As it was runners in distance events were showing signs of tlie heat soon after the start. The programme was opened with the grand parade, for the Kitto Shield. Showing, in their precision of movement, much careful training, tlie Wellington club team presented a neat, finished appearance, scored comfortably over the holders, Kiwi. Points were given as follow: Wellington. 93; Kiwi, 88; Combined Old Boys, 87; Scottish Harriers. 84; Olympic. 78; Petone. GO.
