SUMMER SHOW

V ogelto wn-Mornington Blooms Neither the long spell of dry weather nor the sudden change to rain and wind appeared to have dampened the ardour of the gardeners of Vogeltown and Mornington in their efforts to produce superlative blooms and vegetables for . their Horticultural Society’s annual summer show which was opened on Saturday. In the hall in which the show was held was a most attractive array of summer flowers, a variety of hues assailing the eye, and also a number of extremelj’ succulent vegetable exhibits. The champion bloom, “Mrs. W. H. Phipps,” was a magnificent pink gladiolus, grown and exhibited by Mr. C. I’’. Barrow. The show was opened by Mr. 11. A. Wright, M.P., who was introduced by the society’s president, Mr. IV. S. Mason, N.D.H. (N.Z.). The latter paid tribute to the keen interest that had been taken by Mr. Wright in the society ever since its inception, and of the valuable assistance he had given it. Mr. Mason then outlined the society’s work during the 'period of its existence, and thanked all who had in any way assisted it. Special reference was made to the fact that, thanks to to the committee and to the members generally, the society now possessed a complete set of furnishings. Mr. Wright endorsed Mr. Mason’s remarks, and complimented the society on its progress. He referred particu-. lariy to the wholesome-looking garden products, and said that he considered the exhibits to be of a particularly high standard. This was a matter for congratulation, in view of the spell of dry weather that had settled upon the city. The following is the list of prize-win-ners : — Gladiolus.—Champion bloom (Mrs. W. H.
