WOMAN BUS DRIVER

Her Husband’s Assistant The idea of a woman bus-driver conjures up a vision of a robust female; but as a description of Airs. E. L. Roberts, who helps her husband to run the bus service from Cabramatta to Bonnyrigg, in New South Wales, this would be most incorrect, says a writer to the “Sydney Morning Herald.” She is a petite little woman, with brown hair waving about her face, and is neatly attired these winter months in a light tweed coat, slouch hat and lowheeled shoes. If you hadn't her word for it, you could hardly believe that she is the mother of two little girls, Daphne, aged nine, and Pauline, aged five. And even believing it you would wonder how she manages to run the jobs of mother, housekeeper and bus-driver all at once. But she does, and obviously does them all well. Now she considers herself merely her husband’s assistant, but at one time when her husband ran the Bonnyrigg to Liverpool service frequently she conducted the entire Cabramatta service herself. The Liverpool bus does merely two runs a day now to the service of the schoolchildren of the district, and two on Saturday, so that Mrs. Roberts is only on the job for the whole day when her husband is occupied with repairs. She lias been driving now for 11 years, and was granted her metropolitan bus-driver’s badge about seven years ago. In all that time she has had a clean record, with not one accident. ’ “I believe in careful driving.” Mrs. Roberts' said, “and no speeding." Incidentally, she is the only woman in Sydney who has her bus-driver’s badge.
