SWIMMING TITLES

Intermediate and Junior Championships RESULTS FROM TIMARU By Telegraph.—Press Association Timaru, January 19. The New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championships were commenced at Timaru to-day in ideal weather. A large crowd witnessed fine swimming, no fewer than 63 competitors being present, representing seven provinces. Auckland and Otago are very strongly represented, and there is likely to be keen competition between these two for the shield. Otago made a good start to-day, securing two firsts and two seconds, against Auckland’s one first and one third. The surprise of the day was the defeat of E. Rainey, Auckland, in the 220yds. girls’ intermediate event, the winner being D. Symon, Southland, who had been performing well in the south recently. She won the 100 and 220 junior titles last year, and fully deserved to-day’s success. Rainey swam below form, and was only able to gain third place. Jarvis and Pascoe were expected to fight out the 100yds. intermediate boys’ event. In his heat Jarvis beat Pascoe and won the final rather easily, Paseoe being out of a place. Barry, Otago, swam a good race to gain second place. The 100yds. junior boys’ free-style was a great ra.ee, McGregor, Otago, finishing strongly to beat another promising Southlander in T. Bath.
