WAIRARAPA OPENING Singles Titles Not Defended WIND TROUBLESOME Dominion Special Service. Masterton, January 19. Although the rain held off all day, the conditions were very threatening for the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association s annual championship and handicap tou>nament, which opened on the Masterton and Memorial clubs’ courts to-day. A stiff, gusty wind from the west proved troublesome to players. Good progress was made with the various events, which are nearly all well filled. Entries are only slightly below last year’s total, and the general standard of play is being well maintained. Neither Miss B. Gould (Canterbury) nor D. C l . Coorabe (Wellington) are defending their singles titles. The fact that the New Zealand championships commence at Auckland next week has, doubtless, rolwpd this tournament of some players, wno would otherwise have returned to contest the Wairarapa titles. A number of those plavers competing in the North Island championships at Waipawn have still to arrive, and it is hoped that their presence will raise the standard of performance to an even higher level.
