North Island Titles FIRST DAY AT WAII’AWA Dominion Special Service. Waipawa, January 15. Many leading players from the various provinces of the Dominion are participating in the North Island lawn championships which commenced at »*aipawa to-day in conjunction with the Hawke’s Bay and Waipawa championships. Good weather prevailed and the 10 courts are in excellent condition, fast and well grassed. On account of the Waipukurau tournament not yet beiug finished play to-day was held up. Entries in the various events are good, especially in the men’s and women's championship singles. The present North Island champion, J. Charters, is present to defend his title. Other prominent Dominion players are E. A. Itoussell K, Dyer and O. Coombe, all of Wellington; Lowry, .Hawke’s Bay, Cox and Barknmn, Banganui; E. and A- Dickey. Waverley; E. A. Bearce. Dunedin; Lamb and Robinson, Auckland; Mesdames Adams, Wellington , and McMaster. Mastertou; Misses D. Nicholls and Whisker, Wellington; Haggitt, Palmerston; Graham, Pahiatua; M. Men’s championship doubles: Pearce and Coombe beat Lowry and Hobin, 0-1, 4-6, 0-4. IVomen’s championship doubles: Mrs. Cottei'Hl and Miss Howe beat Miss Macassey nnd Miss Haggitt. 6-4, 6-5. 'Men’s handicap doubles: Barkman and Latham beat Hill and Hill, 9-3. poys’ ■ handicap singles: J. C. Swinburfie beat M. Ormond, 9-6. Other finals will be played to-morrow. The president, Mr. J. D. Ormond, sen., presented a gold cup to Coombe, ’Wellington, the championship winner. SCOTT-RAMSAY CUP The fifth series of tennis matches for the Scott-Ramsay Cup, which is competed for by the smaller tennis flubs in and surrounding Johnsonville, took place cn Saturday afternoon iu fine weather. Results are as follow:— Tawa Flat beat Porirua by 7 games f o 5; Kia Ora beat Woodlands by 7 games to 5; Newlands beat Glenside by 10 games to 2; Johnsonville Methodist a bye. The first-mentioned match was played at Tawa Flat, the second at 'Woodlands (Johnsonville), and the third at Glenside. The next series of matches will bo played on Saturday, the following being the draw:—Newlands v. Porirua,_ at Porirua; Glenside v. Kin Ora. at Porirua (School); 'Woodlands v. Johnsonville Methodist, at Johnsonville Methodist; Tawa Flat a bye.
