BOWLS TOURNEY

Eight Rounds of Rinks Decided CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY Post-Section ( Games to Start To-day By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 15. The annual tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association was continued to-day. Two further games in the section rounds were completed, finalising the eight games to be staged in this division of its full rinks championship. The games provided the highest interest, and many teams fought wth fine vigour to obtain, wins and qualify for the intersection rounds to-morrow. Thirty-eight teams qualified, including the present holders, the .Linwood rink. Christchurch. The weather was ideal in every respect warm, bright, and with an almost cloudless sky. The successful teams which have qualified lor the post-section rounds will assemble at the Carlton greens tomorrow, and will resume play on the two-life system, playing three games ot 21 heads each day. It is estimated that nine rounds will be required to find the champion rink team of the 1934-35 season, thereby finishing on Friday evening. The following qualified with eight wins: Renkin (Carlton). Buchan (Te Aroha). The following qualified with seven wins: Thomas (Wairere),. Lundon (Devonport), Vella (Onehunga), Whittle (Grey Lynn), Robertson (Onehunga), Short (Pukekohe), Walker (Auckland), Little (Hamilton), Wilson (Linwood), Stone (St, John’s)., The following qualified with six wins: Arnott (Palmerston North), Mackie (Dunedin), Hosking (Pukekohe), Loram (Rocky Nook), Adess (St. Hilda), Engebretsen (Napier), Bremner (West End, Auckland), Gee (Te Awamutu), Lett (Park, Masterton), Graham (Carlton), Lancaster (Carlton), Carswell (Auckland), MeWhannell (Hataitai), Pilkington (Hamilton), Harrison .(Auckland), Roberts (Carlton). Henderson (Paeroa), Brighting (Hataitai). Walker (Mt. Albert.). Fraser (Mt. Eden), Sunde (Glen Eden), Newman (Thames), Brackenridge (Lyall Bay), Mingins (Epsom), Dunstan (Waihi) and Richmond (Epsom). Cluira-otor of Games. The character of the games on the fast greens had as a basis very delicately drawn bowils. The series of eight games was a test of consistency of form, and 'those teams which have qualified have maintained remarkable steadiness. oi form. Many teams made brilliant beginnings. dropped form, and regained it only to find that the wins recorded were insufficient to carry them into further rounds. . , The champion rink, G. Dickson, I*. Redpath, 11. F. Gibson, and 11. Wilson, of. the Linwood club, Christchurch, won their two games played to-day. The first was against Kelly, of Epsom, the score being 26 to 17. In the second game the Linwood quartet defeated Yukich (Kaikohe). . . The result of the games in section F was a great surprise. At the commencement of the day, Francis, of Balmoral, led with five wins, and looked almost certain of going forward on the form exhibited in previous rounds. However, their sound bowling of front rank was not ' sustained. In their first game Balmoral met Steele, of Auckland, and it was a soundly trounced team being completely outplayed. Their second game of the day was equally disastrous. De Launay. of Carlton, put figures 36 to 13 upon the board. Bremner, of West End, Auckland, and De Launay, both with four wins, met. One of the two teams was to go out of the championships nt this stage. Bremner’s team never left the concluding result in doubt and won bj’ 30 to 23. Young Skip's Fine Play. The Te Awamutu team skipped by Gee had the task of winning the last game to qualify for further rounds, and met Hutchison, of Dunedin. The last-men-tioned gave a sound game and le. il all the way until the last few heads, when Gee scored two-two and a singleton, running out 24 to 23. The game displayed fine dash by the young skip, Gee, and marks the first occasion in which a Te Awamutu team has qualified in a New Zealand rink tournament. High scoring was a feature of the game between Gordon (St. John’s) and Draper, of Imperial, the score being 42 to 24, totalling 66 points. In the second round Campbell, < f Mount Eden, who was making a bold bid for section honours, met defeat at the hands of Fookes, of Carlton. At one time it looked as if Mount Eden would win, but Carlton played strongly at the finish. Auckland, January 15. Great interest was taken in the final two rounds of the Dominion rinks championship to-day, and there were, many spectators at every green on which the leading teams were playing. Contestants had their eighth successive fine day, and if the weather holds, the tournament will have been one of the most successful in the history of the Dominion association. The position this morning was that four teams had the maximum number of six wins. . There were 23 rinks with five wins, and many with four, all of which had chances of reaching the post-section stages. One of the Wellington rinks with good chances was that of Brighting (Hataitai), with five wins, when play began to-day. This rink has been playing consistently web, and was at the head of its section with two others. Smith (Kelburn) had four wins and two losses, and was still in the running. Hataitai Team’s Chances. '.MeWhannell (.Hataitai), with four wins, also had chances. Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) was at the head of his section with Short, both having five wins and only one loss. Hale (Island Bay), with only two wins, was definitely out of it. Parkhouse (Wellington), with three wins, had no prospects, while Naylor (Thorndon) couhl only claim one wn in the first five rounds. Gilbert (Karori) was still with chances with four wins. There was a round of applause when Brighting won his seventh game this morning against Henderson, 24-13. The Hataitai rink took the lead early, and made certain of entering the post-section plav with six wins. McWhannell’s Hataitai rink also won the seventh game with a comfortable win over Bendall, 29-18, and entered the eighth round with good prospects o£ surviving the section play. Hale lost to Gee, 19-28, this giving the Island' Bay players their fifth loss. . . , ■Smith defeated Cliffe 28-13, this giving the Kelburn rink five wins. When they entered the final round a large crowd watched the Lyall Bay rink skipped by Brackenridge, but the Wellingtonians lost to Newman, 18-25, their tally still being five wins. Parkhouse was too good for Bray, whom he defeated 25-18, the Wellington rink now having four wins. Gilbert’s Karori rink, which still had a chance of six wins when the seventh round began, lost to Ritchie, 20-26. Naylor beat Benfield, 25-20,. his second win of the series. Gaines Unduly Prolonged. A noticeable result of the dry playing surfaces has been the great length of time that some of the games have taken. Some were merely prolonged by numerous dead heads requiring replays, and also by the tendency of some competitors to walk up and inspect the head before delivering each bowl, but in one case where there were no dead heads and very little wandering up to the head a game lasted four hours and 23 minutes.. This was solely due to the long time it takes for a bowl to reach the jack on a keen green at the . slow pace necessary to keep it from rolling on into the ditch, and it has been suggested that games might just as well be kept down to the usual 21 heads insteadof the 25 heads played when there are only two games in a day. Another suggestion is a time limit, but many competitors express objection to tliis as it is apt to spoil the last four heads in a protracted game, often made all the longer by the high quality of the play when two well-matched rinks meet each other. Reason for Satisfaction. Although not numerically strong at the outset, Wellington players had every reason for satisfaction when the eighth and final round commenced this afternoon. Brighting had already qualified for post-section play, while Brackenridge, Smith and MeWhannell, with five wins each, were still iu the iiinuing, with nothing on the result. Brighting lost to Rankin 17-20 and enters the post-section -stage with six wins. Brackenridge qualified by defeating Kerr 23-18, giving him six wins. MeWhannell completed 'Wellington’s good afternoon, beating McComish 30-28. and joining the others in the post-section stage. Smith just failed to qualify. He met a strong rink skipped by section leader Lundon, and lost 15-3.2. This left Smith with five wins, and gave Lundon seven, Lundon going into the post-sections.
