It Happened To-day. SOUTH MAGNETIC POLE DISCOVERED

On January 16, 1009, Dr. (later Sir Edgeworth) David and party, who were members of Lieut, (later Sir Ernest) Shackleton’s Antarctic Expedition, hoisted the Union Jack at ' the South Magnetic* Pole—72 degrees 25 minutes south. 155 degrees 16 minutes west. They were picked up by the Nimrod on February 4. 1909. Prior to setting out on the journey to the South Magnetic Pole. Dr. David had climbed Mt. Erebus, and established its height at 13,350 feet.
