HOMES OF COMPASSION

A number of admirers of the work

cf the Sisters of Compassion met on Wednesday evening to devise means of augmenting the income of the homes. Another “street day” cannot lie allocated until May. 1936, more than two years since the latest one, and the homes have been experiencing not only an adversely affected income, but also calls on their resources that were never anticipated. It was pointed out that the economic conditions prevailing have brought about another problem for the Sisters, in that, iu spite of the good intentions of testators, a number of bequests have proved to bo bequests in name only. All the ready cash or readily realisable assets in some ’estates have been required to meet death duties, so that, even if an estate appeared on paper to be capable of standing a bequest, too frequently it was found that assets could not be turned into cash.

All present were agreed that the Sisters must have some financial as; sislance, aud this as soon as possible. Their harvest was great and increasing; their revenue far short of requirements. It was decided to make the central point of the effort to raise funds tt garden party to be held at the Island Bay Home in February. A committee was set up. with Mr. B. F. Kelly as aud all wellwishers are to be Invited to u general meeting to be held in the Creche building. Buckle Street, on the evening of Wednesday, December 12.
