LOWER HUTT W.C.T.U.

Election of Officers

Showing a credit balance of £4/2/-, the treasurer's report was adopted at the annual meeting of the Lower Hutt W.C.T.U. on Wednesday. There was a good attendance of members. A letter inviting to St. John’s Church on Sunday all interested in matters of temperance was received. Greetings from England were received from Mrs. Heyes.

The secretary reported a box of clothing sent to the Willard Home. The monthly thought was: “The best things never are the easiest; in every cross Christ hides his seed of light.” The annual report showed ten meetings held during the year, and one special meeting. Delegates had been to district executives and tiie convention. Clothing had been sent to homes and comforts provided for the seamen. The “White Ribbon” reported two new members, With the cradle roll at 104 members, 25 becoming eight years of age and 12 new babies. The following is the election of officers for 1935:—-Secretary, Mrs. Aiderslev; president, Mrs. Lopdell (re-elect-ed) ; vice-presidents, Mesdames Garlick, Routley, Crawford and Ballantyne (all re-elected); treasurer, Mrs. Cooper; correspondence secretary, Mrs. Crawford; superintendent cradle roll, Mrs. Taylor; “W.R.” agents, Mrs. Baigent; librarian, Mrs. Green; Bristol Square devotional superintendent, Mrs. Ballantyne; pianist, Mrs. Clark; reporter, Mrs. Crawford; monthly thoughts, Mrs. Birrell.

DONATIONS WANTED

Mental Hospital Gifts

An appeal for assistance for providing Christmas cheer for mental hospital patients is being made by the Rev. A. Harding, of Lower Hutt, who hopes to get sufficient support to enable 1000 parcels containing fruit, sweets, nuts, etc., to lie distributed. Gifts of any sort and cash donations will be very welcome. The first distribution of gifts for men will take place at a concert at the Mental Hospital at I’orirua on December 9. The principal event, however, will take place in the main building on Sunday, December 16, when a concert will be given by the Petone Methodist Choir. Mr. Harding will be grateful for gifts and donations to be forwarded before December 13 either to his home or to Messrs. Jenness's shop, Lower Hutt.

Hutt Valley Club Races

The Hutt Valley Homing Pigeon Club recently flew a flock race from Whangarei, an air-line distance of 381 miles. The birds were liberated by Mr. A. Pickering at 6 a.in. Mr. J. Hardgrave’s bird put up a very good performance, winning by 18 yards a minute. Results are as follow:— J. Hardgrave’s bird, 1072.8yd5. per min'., 1; R, Leighton and Son’s Frills, 1054.3yd5., 2; A. Bold and Son’s Dawn 1053.8yd5., 3; D. Andrews’s Black Mint, 1039.8yd5., 4; C. Philp’s Sky Blue, 1036 m yds., 5; R. Reid and Son’s Opihi, 963.8 yds., 6; R. Clark and Son’s Darkie, 899.0 yds., 7; W. Bond’s Humphrey, 889.6yd5,., 8; A. Barnes’s San Tun, 887.5yd5., 9. In conjunction with this race, a onebird interval race was flown from Wbangarei. The birds were liberated at 10-minute intervals by Mr. A. Pickering. The first bird was tossed at 5 a.m. in overcast weather. Mr. Dave Andrews s Waterloo put up a good performance to win by 14 yards a minute. Results are as follow: — D. Andrews's Waterloo, 1168.8yds. per min., 1; A. Barnes’s Slipper, 1154.4yd5., 2; P. Mexted’s Dark Girf. 1057.8yd5., 3; C. Philp’s Shamrock, 1051.8yd5., 4; R. Leighton and 'Sou’s Rajah, 1036.4yd5., 5; W. Bond’s Black Watch, 985.8yd5., 6. A relay race was flown from three race points on November 17, the race points and distances being Mananui (162 miles), Frankton Junction (23S miles), -and Heleusville (316 miles). These races were all one-bird flock races. The average velocity was calculated and the results are as follow: — J. Hardgrave, 908yds. per mm., 1; R. Leighton and Son, 858.4yd5.. 2; W. Bond, 837yds., 3; A. Bold and Son, 832.1yd5., 4; P. Mexted, 812.6yd5., 5; J. Dallenger, 799.3yd5., 6; R. Clark and Son, 747.9yd5., 7; D. Andrews, 745.1yd5., 8; A. Barnes, 641.1yd5., 9; R. Reid and Son, 633.6yd5., 10; C. Philp, 616yds., 11; R. Mae Murray. 506yds., 12. Owing to an accident to Mr. Mexted s clock he was robbed of an almost certain first. The race flown from Frankton was (or yearlings only, and carried with it the title of yearling championship. This was won by Mr. J. Hardgrave, with P. Mexted a close second.

GIFT EVENING

Social For Bride-elect

A delightful gift evening, at which Mrs. C. IV. Burgess was hostess, and Miss Jean Burgess, a bride-to-be, and her fiance, Mr. Gilbert Clark, were the guests of honour, took place recently at Knox Schoolroom. The hostess was in black velvet, with crystal necklet and carrings. Miss Burgess, wearing lemou georgette, received a bouquet of rosebuds and sweet peas. The stage was decorated with clusters of pale pink and green bells, streamers, afid bowls of beautiful flowers, illuminated by the footlights. During the opening of the parcels tlie stage was lit up, the hall being in darkness. Miss Burgess.received many beautiful gifts. Among those present were : Mesdames Grenfell (2).
